How often have you walked into a room to do something only to forget what that something was? The human brain can be thought of as a mighty supercomputer but with limits. If you have ever received a message about “low memory” on your phone or computer, then you had to clear some space before adding more data. The human brain works following the same principle.
For each piece of data, you take in; another fragment must be pushed out to create room. There are ways to improve your memory and create new memories. Keep in mind, if you are forgetting information such as your home address, or a recent conversation then you may be dealing with an issue that is more complex and needs to be checked by a doctor.
For any acts of random forgetfulness, try using the following tricks to help you remember
What you need to:
Make Connections
It can be difficult to remember an individual piece of information that’s floating around in your brain without connections to your life. This is the reason why you need to put things into groups and associate them with other connections. It can be much easier to remember a number if you associate it with a specific color. Or place things into a category such as a file folder to recall when required.
Consider What Would Happen When You Forget
Imagine the consequences if you forget something you needed to remember. What if you forgot to set an alarm correctly to wake you up? What would the consequences be? You would be late for work, get stuck in a traffic jam and fall behind with your schedule at work. All of this, just, because you forgot to set an alarm. When you have identified the worst-case scenario, you are going to remember to set the alarm.
Create a Story
This trick is very helpful for any student studying blocks of information. The facts may be connected, and in the same category, but it can be difficult to remember them if they are scattered around. Creating a story that includes all the facts then it will be simple to remember them when they are required.
Get Your Eight Hours Sleep Every Night
During deep sleep, your long-term memories are fused within the brain. When your sleep is disrupted, the memories can become fractured. You may be surprised at how much you will be able to recall when you sleep for eight hours every night.
Use Technology
You can utilize technology to help improve your memory and free up space in your brain. When you do not need to remember phone numbers, then you can use that space in your brain for other information. You can utilize the contact list on your smartphone to remember phone numbers. Just make sure you back it up on a regular basis!
